3 questions to Evelyne Gourdon

1

Why did you create this fund for pianists?

The piano has accompanied every moment of my life since I was 4 years old, and it has enabled me to discover, experience and pass on an indescribable language that expresses all the facets of the soul. Along the way, I have had the immense pleasure of working with wonderful teachers who have passed on to me the legacy of Cortot and Fischer. The purpose of the Fund is therefore to encourage, support, perpetuate, promote and finance any action that helps promising young musicians, whether French or foreign, who wish to further their training.

How do you help musicians?

In a variety of ways. For example, by:

  • At the start of a career, by organising and financing a recording or providing financial support for the recording of a CD.
  • By organising concerts
  • By funding Master Classes, such as those given by David Fray in Barbezan (Hautes Pyrénées) as part of the "Offrande Musicale" festival, or by François Chaplin as part of the "Festival de Pontlevoy", to help pass on knowledge and know-how about music.
  • And by supporting public-interest initiatives to promote and disseminate our musical heritage and excellence, particularly by encouraging young musicians, such as the "Les Pianissimes" association run by Olivier Bouley for its season, the new Kairos Festival run by Geoffroy Couteau, whose 1st edition in July was a resounding success, and the "Arties" association which, under the impetus of Gauthier Herrmann, offers a season enabling young virtuosos to meet an audience.
  • And last but not least, in partnership with the town of Poissy and the Poissy theatre, we are organising a festival entitled "l'Envol musical", which will showcase a dozen young artists in an incomparable venue. We also have another goal, which we feel is just as essential: to try to tame and reach a young audience not used to classical music..
3

How do you meet them?

First of all, I listen to them - once or several times - exams or concerts - to make sure that their playing fits in with the heritage I have received. I listen to a lot of recitals, but sometimes it's the recommendation of a friend that puts me on their path. Then, it's very intuitive... we meet and exchange ideas.... And then there's a committee to whom I submit my ideas...
