The concept

Interpreting courses: the concept

Today, the Endowment Fund has chosen to sponsor public master classes. This seems essential. Why is that?

The main reason lies in the very meaning of the word "class". It seems that this notion is disappearing these days, with classes being given more often than not in private...

Not so long ago, when you were admitted to a teacher's class at the CNSM or the Ecole Normale de Musique, the class was the preferred method of teaching. It was unthinkable not to listen to the other students play; we gained a lot from it because all the advice they received could only enrich us: advice on interpretation, related techniques, fingering... These lessons led to the heart of the works, enabling all the students either to go into them in greater depth or to discover them, and often... to want to perform them!

So much time was saved by knowing the work and the means to be used before even deciphering it...!

Michelangelo wrote: "I saw the angel and sculpted him". In the same way, a real class encourages and prepares the work in depth: "I understood the work, and I played it".

Applications for the 2024 master class are now open. They will be given by :

The young pianists who have agreed to take part in David Fray's Masterclasses are already fine, talented artists. But they know that when it comes to art, there's no choice: you have to set the bar high and remain very humble in order to progress... When you lose the taste for it or don't give yourself the means, you go backwards.

Among world-renowned artists, few are generous enough to share their world - and very few - know how to find the simple, precise words to light the way for young people in their quest for excellence.

May these courses continue to help and inspire other young pianists ....

May these courses also continue to enchant a public (musician or not) in search of in-depth knowledge of works written for the piano...

Many thanks to David Fray!
