The Fund supports the Bulgarian "Ventsislav Yankoff" Scholarship Competition Foundation

Ventsislav Yankoff

In tribute to Ventsislav Yankoff, born on 24 March 1926 in Sofia, Kingdom of Bulgaria, and died on 8 January 2022 in Paris.

A pupil of Wilhelm Kempff, Marguerite Long and Edwin Fischer, he won, ex-aequo with Aldo Ciccolini, the First Grand Prize of the Marguerite-Long-Jacques-Thibaud Competition in 1949.

He went on to enjoy an immense international career, passing on his rigour and poetry as a full professor at the Paris Conservatoire from 1977 to 1991, and then as an honorary professor. He then taught at the École normale. His students included François Chaplin and Claire Désert.

To honour his memory and encourage the passing on of his musical legacy, his niece this year set up the Ventsislav Yankoff Foundation to encourage young musicians who are "poets of the piano" by awarding two competitive grants to support their studies - for 13/16 year olds and for 17/20 year olds.

The first competition took place in Sofia on 16 May 2023. François Chaplin and Claire Désert were on the jury. Ivailo Vasilev aged 15 and Angel Yalachkov aged 17 are superb winners! We'll be following their journey, which got off to such a good start!
